Germany's Bettina Hoy Leads Eventing with Record Score

Bettina Hoy of Germany, the 1997 European Champion, left the spectators at the Eventing World Championship speechless on Friday with a stunning display of dressage on Woodsides Ashby. They were awarded a record breaking score of 20.80 for their test. Scoring an unprecedented perfect ‘ten’ score from all three judges for her final riding mark.

Hoy's test was a clear cut above the rest, with WOodsides Ashby displaying wonderfully balanced, rhythmic paces and truly working from behind. Her score will significantly boost the German Team score at this stage.

Current European Champion Pippa Funnell of Great Britain had the unenviable task of following Hoy into the arena. Riding her championship and Badminton CCI**** winner Supreme Rock, she too went below 30. Showing an extended walk that scored a perfect ten from all three judges. A final score of 28.60 at this level is phenomenal and in most circumstances would assure you of the lead.

Another highlight of the morning session was the test of twenty-seven-year-old Sasha Harrison of Ireland and All Love de Fenaud. The baby of the Irish Team, Harrison lifted all their spirits with test that although not flashy was accurate. She received a total mark of 35.40, which takes her into the top ten.

Olivia Bunn (AUS) with GV Top of the Line, was the third rider for the Australian team. Bunn was eighth individually at the WEG in Rome and left the arena with a mark of 39.60.

It is a reflection of the standard of competition at the Games that the marks of the top ten riders are all below 40.

At this stage Bettina Hoy (GER) leads, with Pippa Funnell(GBR) in second and Phillip Dutton (AUS) in third. Twenty-three riders will perform their tests in the second session after lunch.
