France Wins Individual Eventing Gold - USA Wins Team Gold

Forty-eight year old Jean Teulere and Espoir de la Mare became France’s first ever Eventing World Champion Sunday, 15th September. In an immensely close competition, that was not decided until the last competitor finished the show jumping, the American Team (175.40) retained their overnight position making them World Champions for the first time in over a decade.

The Golden USA Team
Amidst the knocking down of fences the French Team (192.40) of TEULERE, Jean-Luc FORCE and Didier COURREGES moved into the Silver medal position. The British Team (199.00) of Jeanette BRAKEWELL, Pippa FUNNELL, William FOX-PITT and Leslie LAW were elevated to Bronze medal position.

It was all change in the individual as well as overnight leader John WILLIAMS (USA) and CARRICK jumped last. They dropped four fences to collect 16 penalties and slipped from first to fourth. Jeanette BRAKEWELL (GBR) 52.00, won Silver with OVER TO YOU and Piia PANTSU (FIN) 52.60, put Finnish eventing on the map with a Bronze.

First to jump for the American team Amy TRYON (USA), who completed the cross-country despite a fall, collected four faults to finish on 204.60. TYRON was to become the discount score. First to jump for the French Didier COURREGES (FRA) was one of the first riders to jump clear inside the time.

France's Jean Teulere
Eleven faults for Heelan THOMPKINS (NZL), 95.20 shortened the odds of the New Zealand Team (224.80) moving up from fifth. William FOX-PITT (GBR) and Pippa FUNNELL (GBR) collected four faults each to keep the British Team in contention.

David O’CONNOR’S (USA) clear round was swiftly followed by another from Olivia BUNN (AUS). David MIDDLETON (AUS), 65.40 and Stuart TINNEY (AUS) 76.00, collected 37 faults between, putting Australia out of the medals.

BRAKEWELL (GBR) who followed TINNEY into the arena knew that the British Team’s hopes of a medal rested on her shoulders.

Canada's highest placing rider was Bruce Mandeville and the 14-year-old Canadian-bred Trakehner mare Larissa. With only one fence down in stadium jumping, the third and final phase of three day eventing, Mandeville moved up in the standings to finish the World Championships with a final placing of 29th.

“She’s great, but we were right beside the crowd and a lot of people were having rails,” noted Mandeville, referring to the fact that only five riders were able to post a clear round in the stadium jumping phase. “It was also great to be riding a Canadian-bred horse!”

The Stadium Course
Wyndham St. John, originally from British Columbia but now based in England, finished in 43rd position. The pair was penalized twenty points at The Boat obstacle and incurred 80 time penalties in total during the cross-country phase. St. John then incurred an additional 9 points in the stadium phase, but still managed to climb from 69th after dressage to 43rd overall.

“Oliver was great!” said St. John about her 13-year-old American thoroughbred gelding hanlding the cross-country. “It was hard work out there, but he answered all the questions.”

Mike Tucker, the course designer for the cross-country phase, was pleased with the outcome of the cross-country phase. “I hoped the course would make the riders think. And it did. Some riders did brilliantly and some other combinations did better than expected. The crowd had a great day. The atmosphere was great and no horses were seriously hurt. That is always very dear to my heart.”

And when asked about the IOC plans to get rid of Eventing from the Olympic programme, Tucker said "The day showed that this is very much a sport that the IOC wants to be part of.”
